Moments like this…

Just few days ago, I visited Vienna Airport and got a picture of the general situation on site. I have to say that Vienna Airport has always been more than just a starting point for my travels. For me, the airport was and is an international meeting place, a place of joy, a place where people come together again and a workplace that has always benefited from the special “spirit” of its airport and airline employees.

With the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, this place of life, which was frequented by up to 100,000 passengers on some peak days, has degenerated into a ghost town.  Apart from a few isolated return or cargo flights, there is hardly any air traffic to be seen at Austria’s capital airport today. Terminals empty of people, closed shops and orphaned airport access roads currently characterise the unreal image of Vienna International Airport. In moments like these I don’t just think about my personal future, but also about the future of an entire industry that has been rushing from one success story to the next in recent years. There is no question that the corona virus has hit and will continue to hit the aviation & travel industry hard in the future, but at the same time this crisis is also an opportunity for a new beginning, in which the topic of flying will hopefully regain its value.
